Hawaii runs its own rabies-free entry program, separate from the standard USDA/CDC process for the rest of the country — it's the strictest pet-entry pathway in the United States, and the one first-time travelers most often get wrong.
The 5-Day-Or-Less Program
If your dog's paperwork and titer results line up correctly, they can clear Hawaii's Animal Quarantine Station in as little as five days instead of the standard 120-day quarantine. The catch: every step has to happen in the right order, starting with a microchip and rabies vaccination well before the FAVN blood test.
- Microchip implanted before the rabies vaccination series
- FAVN rabies antibody test drawn at least 120 days before arrival
- A second rabies booster if your dog's vaccination history has any gaps
- A health certificate issued within 14 days of departure
Why the FAVN window trips people up
The FAVN test has to be run at an approved lab, and results routinely take 3-4 weeks to come back. Pet parents who wait until a month before their trip to book it are the ones who end up in the 120-day quarantine track instead.
